VIC/P49 is a large permit located in the south eastern region of the Gippsland Basin, offshore Victoria. There are several prospects in the northern part of the permit which are close to existing oil and gas discoveries at Basker/Manta, Flounder and Blackback/Terakihi. The southern part of the permit lies in deeper water and has the potential to contain large structures in an area that is completely unexplored.
An exploration well is scheduled to be drilled in the northern part of the permit in 2009. This well will test a possible extension of the Basker oil field trend into VIC/P49 either through the drilling of the Bronze Whaler prospect which is a similar structure to the Basker oil field immediately to the north or through drilling the Sleeper prospect which is a possible extension of the Basker field itself.
2D seismic data was acquired over these prospects in July 2007 and this data will be interpreted to select one for drilling as the next well.
Additional 2D seismic data was also acquired over the large deep water leads Tiger and Leopard in the southern part of the permit. These leads lie in an area of the permit which contains a geological section which although related to the highly prolific Gippsland Basin to the northwest is completely unexplored and although high risk has the potential for very large accumulations. This data will also be interpreted and is anticipated to provide prospects that will be ready for drilling in the next two years.
